Reed Case Study

We helped Reed Learning evaluate WhatsApp as a customer communication channel, providing support across conversational design, video, implementation and live operation.

Executive Summary

Reed Learning partnered with Premier CX to evaluate whether WhatsApp and rich media could improve engagement across the learner enquiry and sales journey. The proof of concept was deliberately designed as a low-risk, time-bound and data-led exercise, enabling both teams to test the service in a real operating environment and make decisions based on measured learner behaviour.

The results demonstrated that WhatsApp outperformed email on every headline engagement measure captured in the wrap-up. Just as importantly, Reed Learning and Premier CX worked closely throughout the POC to configure, test, review and refine the service, creating a trusted evidence base for future decisions.

The challenge

Reed Learning wanted to understand whether conversational messaging could complement established channels such as web forms, email and telephone. The key questions were practical: could WhatsApp improve response and engagement rates, shorten the time taken to respond, support more natural fact-finding conversations and create a better learner experience without introducing unnecessary implementation risk?

A genuinely collaborative evaluation

From the outset, the project was treated as a joint evaluation rather than a simple technology deployment. Reed contributed its industry knowledge and courses; Premier CX contributed specialist conversation design and CX expertise, video and rich-media production, analytics and ongoing support.

A close working relationship allowed both teams to learn quickly. Decisions were made using live data and frontline experience. Weekly reviews helped identify learnings quickly allowing agile development of the solution that ultimately delivered better results, faster.

Measured results

Measure Email WhatsApp
Open Rate 45% 67.9%
Response rate 10% 11.6%
Average response rate Not reported Reduced from 8 hours to 1 hour after daily upload

The POC showed that learners were willing to use WhatsApp for more than a simple initial response. Conversations included early-stage fact-finding before learners moved to another channel such as email or telephone. The reduction in response time after introducing a daily data upload also demonstrated how operational improvements could materially increase the service’s effectiveness. A future integrated model could reduce response times further by removing manual hand-offs.

"The service proved effective, and the collaborative approach gave us confidence"

The Partnership Impact

The project delivered more than a set of channel metrics. It gave Reed Learning a structured way to evaluate WhatsApp in context, with practical support from design through to live operation. For Premier CX, the engagement demonstrated the value of combining technical expertise with collaborative working, responsive support and continuous optimisation. Together, the teams demonstrated that conversational design (including the use of video as a communication tool) added significant value.
